At the end of the 18th century, on a remote island in Brittany, the painter Marianne was commissioned to produce a wedding portrait of the young woman Héloïse. She has so far refused to pose for such a portrait. The reason for this is that she doesn't want to be married at all. Marianne dresses up as a lady's companion to gain the trust of Héloïse, and soon falls in love with her.
