Authorities in Greece have extended measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, shutting down shops, cafes, bars, malls and restaurants.

Libraries, museums, archeological sites and sports venues have also reportedly been closed.

Video filmed in the northern city of Thessaloniki on Saturday shows deserted streets and protective measures in place.

"Cities in Greece have turned to ghost towns, following the closure of shops and a 'traffic ban' that has been implemented as a measure to prevent the coronavirus from spreading," the filmer said. "Once-crowded public transportation now moves nearly empty and measures have been taken to protect drivers."

Greek authorities on Saturday said that an additional 38 patients have been infected by the coronavirus, raising the total to 228, ekathimerini.com reported.
