Residents of Ile Epo community in the Abule-Egba area of Lagos, on Monday, counted their losses following the fire that destroyed many properties when petroleum product pipeline exploded in the community.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the victims, John Okunebe, revealed that pipeline explosions had become a regular occurrence in the community since 2006.

Okunebe said that he had personally made several attempts to get security agencies to improve security along the pipelines but it didn't work in the long term.

He said that his house was gutted and he lost everything but the clothes on his back

Another victim of the fire, Taiwo Odugbesan cried as she narrated how she took a torch from her house to inspect what was causing the commotion outside, only for her not to be able to enter her house again, as the house was gutted by the fire.

She also said that even as the area was far from the pipeline areas, they had often called on government and security agencies to address the activities of vandals to no avail.

Odugbesan lamented that all she had ever worked for in her life had been razed by the fire and called on the government to help the victims of the explosion.

So far, five persons have been confirmed dead, several houses razed and over 100 persons displaced by the fire.
