CHADAR TREK - A frozen highway to zanskar
A short documentry
The chadar route stretches from Chilling in Ladakh region at one end (Leh side) & ends at Padum (Zanskar) some 105 kms away. This has come to be
famously known as full Chadar trek stretching over 14 days to & fro. What has captured the world’s imagination even more is
the shorter version from Chilling to Nerak stretching 40kms one side.

Chadar trek the frozen highway

the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh where the famous Chadar trek takes place is under threat of increased global warming and
disturbing activities from the visitors. The 105km stretch of frozen river is a wonderful natural phenomenon which was initially
used by the locals to carry out their business of selling pelts, food, utensils etc. But soon the path was undertaken by the
trekkers and the famous Chadar trek was introduced to the world.

The out of the world discovery of the mighty frozen river got a lot of attention across the globe resulting in huge tourist flow
every year. Although it brought great revenue for the region through tourism sector for years, it also underwent some intolerable
human activities which now are responsible for the degrading beauty of the place.

Huge amount of plastic, human excreta and other harmful waste were discovered from the river surroundings which is disturbing
the ecological balance of the place. Studies indicate that with the same rate of increase in global warming annually,
the river won’t last for long.
