In the winter of 2006, Rory Allardice, a well-travelled Scotsman embarked on a journey to Libya to visit the country where his father, Dallas Allardice had been captured during the Second World War, while serving as a commando there behind the German lines. Since childhood, Libya had been a country of fascination to Rory for all kinds of reasons but the main motivation, as it had been for many others before him was to pay homage to Dallas's fallen friends and comrades in Tobruk. Muammar Ghadhaffi was very much in control at the time and enjoying some international tolerance and recognition. The people of the country were not doing so well in spite of the country's vast natural resources, although some satellite dishes had been allowed, more contact with the outside world was happening and it was clearly a time of mild transition. The treasures of the country with its ancient Roman, Greek and Berber ruins and its fascinating history along with the personal quest and a few wrong turns along the way all contributed to the adventure, emotions and self-discovery.
