As Director of the CDC in 1995, I was called upon to send a team of public health workers to Zaire to fight an Ebola outbreak that ultimately involved 315 infections and 250 deaths. We, along with colleagues from WHO, were successful in ending that epidemic. However, Ebola would be back time and time again. The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa resulted in over 4,000 deaths and well over 20,000 infections. We can learn a lot from the agents of infectious diseases. They teach us the value of eternal vigilance and the price of neglect of our public health infrastructure. They highlight disparities in health and the impact of social determinants of health globally, as we continue to strive for global health equity. And over time, and repeated encounters, they develop resistance to some of our most powerful antibiotics. So we need the American Public Health Association's Control of Communicable Diseases Manual to remind us of the challenge we face and to keep us updated as to the latest approaches to control these communicable disease agents. We welcome this 20th edition.David Satch, MD, PhDMorehouse School of Medicine16th US Surgeon General
