An Air Canada passenger plane made a precautionary landing at the international airport of Madrid. The Boeing 767-300 had taken off from Madrid this afternoon for a flight to Toronto, but asked permission to return after half an hour.

Air Canada said in an email to a journalist that at or shortly after taking off in Madrid a tire had been torn and one of the two engines had failed. The airline pointed out that the aircraft has ten tires and can fly on one engine and that the crew had trained on it.

The landing was apparently normal:

To get rid of fuel, the aircraft flew for hours in circles southeast of Madrid. An F-18 from the Spanish Air Force took off to record the damage to the Boeing.

The aircraft had 128 passengers on board. A runway was cleared and prepared at the airport. The fire brigade and ambulances were ready. Based on direct images, the landing went smoothly.
