U.S. Democrats began to lay out their case against President Donald Trump Wednesday (January 22). They were the opening remarks of his impeachment trial they accused Trump of a quote "corrupt scheme" to pressure Ukraine to help him get re-elected. House Democrats are trying to convince Senate Republicans Trump should be removed from office. U.S. Representative, Democrat Adam Schiff put his argument in historic terms. He said the founding fathers would be turning in their grave and warned that America's prestige would suffer if the Senate aquits him: (SOUND BITE)(ENGLISH) REP. ADAM SCHIFF, SAYING: "The framers of the Constitution worried then, as we worry today, that a leader might come to power, not to carry out the will of the people that he was elected to represent, but to pursue his own interests." Trump was impeached last month by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives on charges of abuse of power and obstructing Congress. Trump has denied wrongdoing. The Senate is controlled by Republicans and it's all but certain Trump will be acquitted. The effect of the trail on his re-election bid is less clear. On Wednesday, Schiff argued Trump was trying to find dirt on Joe Biden the former Vice President and a leading opponent among the Democrats. Schiff quoted a July call between Trump and Ukraine's leader Volodymr Zelenskiy- brought to light by a whistleblower.
