In New Year’s Eve speech, Xi Jinping ‘hopes for the best’ for Hong Kong in 2020

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered his 2020 new year message on state television on December 31, 2019. In a 15-minute speech, Xi said he “sincerely hopes for the best” for Hong Kong, and urged the city to strive for stability. The Chinese leader also highlighted Macau as a positive example of the implementation of “one country, two systems” principles. While reviewing China’s achievements from 2019, Xi said China would safeguard world peace and promote common development in the year ahead.
