Foal rescued after breaking free and spending the night stuck in swamp

A horse who broke free from his rope was rescued after spending the night stuck in a muddy swamp.

Suriya Kongsilp, 63, tethered his one-month-old foal to a tree and left him there to eat grass in Krabi, southern Thailand on Wednesday (December 18) morning.

He did not see the young horse when he came back in the afternoon but he heard a morning from a nearby pond which was 32ft away from the tree.

Suriya found the clumsy nag in the muddy swamp struggling to stay afloat. The farmer gathered locals to help the young stallion but it was too heavy to pull up.

Rescue crews had to leave the foal there overnight because it was too dark to try and retrieve him and they came back again on Thursday (December 19) morning.

Locals then helped to tie the fatigued horse with rope and dragged him from the quagmire. The owner believes his horse was stuck because of his disobedient behaviour that has been causing problems.

He said: "I tied him to the tree because he is a restless horse. But I think he pulled the rope and it tore, then he slipped into the swamp.

"This is the second time in a short period that he has needed to be rescued. He was just retrieved from a drain a couple days ago after quite a similar incident."

The young stallion was later sent to the vets to treat him for exhaustion of the ordeal.
