Tens of thousands of civilians began to flee the northwestern Syrian town of Maarat al-Numan on December 22, 2019, as airstrikes by the Syrian government troops continued to hit the town in the rebel-held Idlib province. The Syrian regime pledged to take back Idlib from the Islamist militant group and resumed bombings in the region in late November.
