According to a legend, Markandeya was the only person on earth who knew this mantra. Moon was once in trouble when cursed by King Daksha. Markandeya gave Mahamrityunjaya mantra to Daksha's daughter Sati for the moon. According to another version it is the seed mantra told to the sage Kahola which was given by Lord Shiva to the sage Sukracharya, who taught it to the sage Dadhichi, who gave it to King Aishuva, through which it reached the Shiva Purana.
