Urdu humour writer Mujtaba Hussain has announced to return his Padma Shri award to protest "the atmosphere of fear and hatred created by the Modi government". In 2007, Mujtaba Hussain was awarded Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian honor in the country for his contributions to Urdu literature. he said that he is pained over the current situation in the country with those in power targeting minorities, especially Muslims.

नागरिकता कानून को लेकर विरोध बढ़ता ही जा रहा है. हिंसक विरोध प्रदर्शन के बाद अब पुरस्कार वापसी की भी शुरुआत हो गई है. पद्म पुरस्कार से सम्मानित उर्दू लेखक और व्यंग्यकार मुजतबा हुसैन ने पुरस्कार लौटाने की घोषणा की है. उन्होंने कहा है कि देश में मौजूदा हालात काफी खराब हैं, नागरिकता संशोधन कानून लोकतंत्र पर हमला है जिसके विरोध में वो अपना पद्म पुरस्कार सरकार को वापस करेंगे. बता दें कि उर्दू के व्यंगकार मुजतबा हुसैन को साल 2007 में पद्म श्री से सम्मानित किया गया था.
