In a time of “gender reveal” parties, parents Jay Brissette and Miguel Ruelas decided not to assign their baby a gender at birth. In California, and multiple other US states, that is allowed on birth certificates. But when the couple moved forward with getting their child a social security number, the federal government said it needed to know the baby’s gender – ultimately, assigning the baby as male on its own.
