Death is venerated in Mexico on altars like this one in the Tepito neighbourhood in the country's capital, where the skeletal "Death Saint", or "Santa Muerte" -- a female deity famous for being worshipped by drug cartels but also followed by a wider sector of Mexican society -- shows how intertwined Mexican culture is with the end of life.
