Fewer Foreign Students Is
Costing the US Billions of Dollars.
Since the end of 2016, there has been a
steady fall in U.S. foreign student enrollment.
According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators, it has cost the American economy
nearly $12 billion.
One particular school,
California State University Northridge,
has lost $6.5 million from 2016-19.
NAFSA adds that the decline
has also led to 65,000 jobs being lost.
There's many variables, but largely it's been the policies and rhetoric from the current administration that's really driven the numbers to move in that direction, NAFSA Public Policy Director Rachel Banks, via CNN Business.
Survey data from NAFSA shows that foreign students are more worried about their safety in the U.S.
They also feel that it is
harder to get an American visa.
It's not only the anti-immigrant rhetoric being expressed by this administration, there's also increasing concern with regard to gun violence in this country, NAFSA Public Policy Director
Rachel Banks, via CNN Business.
For 2018-19, a recent report from
U.S. Department of State says new international
student enrollments fell 0.9 percent.
In the year before that,
it dropped 6.6 percent.
For the first time in the U.S., there has
now been a decline for three straight years
