Thousands of waterlilies bloom on lake in northern Thailand

Thousands of beautiful waterlilies have bloomed on a lake in northern Thailand.

The bright pink flowers are seen covering a lake in Phayao, northern Thailand, on Wednesday (November 20).

Locals are now taking tourists on boat rides on the water, which stretches some 40 acres across the farmland.

Tourism chief Somboon Buated said residents had been taking care of the water lilies, called Bua Deang in Thai, for the previous ten years resulting in the gorgeous annual blooms.

Somboon said: "The red lotus lake has been preserved by residents for more than ten years and we would like tourists to visit every year.

"The water lilies annually bloom two months a year, from November to December.''

The lilies are in Kwan Phayao district. Kwan is from the local northern dialect adopted from Burma, which means lake. Kwan Phayao means Phayao Lake.
