Tens of thousands of Japanese cheered for new Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako as the couple passed by in a parade on November 10, 2019, in Tokyo.  The 59-year-old monarch ascended to the throne on May 1, 2019, following the abdication of his father, Akihito.
