Aatish Taseer: Cut Off From My Country & Kin for Criticising Modi
  • 4 years ago
In May 2019, TIME magazine published an article by journalist Aatish Taseer, in which he criticised Narendra Modi. The article, published at the height of the general election campaign, was featured on the cover of the magazine with the headline ‘India’s Divider in Chief’.

Six months later, Taseer’s Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) stands revoked and he thinks it is the government’s reprisal against his article. He will now be reportedly disallowed from even visiting India.

Responding to the controversy, Taseer wrote in a new article on TIME – “I had expected a reprisal, but not a severing. With my grandmother turning 90 next year – and my mother 70 — the government has cut me off from my country and family.”
