Scientists Announce
Discovery of New HIV Strain.
A recently-published study in the
'Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes'
has reported the discovery of a new strain of HIV.
The strain, dubbed HIV-1 subtype L, is
the first new strain of the AIDS-causing
virus to be found since 2000. .
According to the study’s co-author, Dr. Carole
McArthur, the discovery is a reminder of the
diseases continued “evolution.”.
This discovery reminds us that to end the
HIV pandemic, we must continue to out think
this continuously-changing virus and use the
latest advancements in technology and
resources to monitor its evolution, Dr. Carole McArthur, University
of Missouri, to CNN.
The new strain is reportedly not a cause
for alarm, as it is an “outlier” that has
not effected a large number of people. .
There's no reason to panic or even to worry
about it a little bit … Not a lot of people are
infected with this. This is an outlier, Dr. Anthony Fauci, National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to CNN.
Although it is not known how HIV-1 subtype L affects
patients with the disease, it is believed that the strain
responds positively to current HIV treatments
