Researchers develop technology to source electricity from clothes in IIT Kharagpur

The researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have developed a technology to source electricity from clothes drying in open space. The power which comes from electricity is changing lives of the rural community. While speaking to ANI, the Professor of IIT Kharagpur, Suman Chakraborty said, “Clothes are made of cellulose fibers which have charge in their walls. If you immerse a piece of cloth in salt solution and it will flow through fibers and ionise. It generates a continuous voltage. If connected to external register and it can generate small power.” “We have up-scaled this mechanism of generation of power by taking our technology to 'Dhobi Ghat' where washermen dry clothes. This power may not be good enough for large scale application but is good enough to change lives of rural community at large,” professor added.
