Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung has been banned from running in the November 2019 district council elections.  The Hong Kong government said on October 28, 2019, that Wong had not demonstrated that he changed his stance on independence.  The former student leader said the Chinese central government in Beijing directed the decision to make him the only candidate disqualified from the November 24 polls.
