Organic Farming Is Worse for
Climate Change, Study Says.
Researchers at Cranfield University in the
United Kingdom recently took a look at organic
farming and its effects on climate pollution. .
According to their study, if England
and Wales were to shift entirely to
organic crop farming, product yields
would be slashed by 40 percent. .
This would be due to the absence
of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides,
which are used in conventional
farming to boost crop yields.
As a result, more land would have
to be cleared for use, boosting greenhouse
gas emissions by a predicted 21 percent. .
The same applies to products like beef, as cows
would require longer to reach their optimal size
without the use of hormones and supplements.
The cows would also
have longer to produce
methane, which is a particularly
harmful greenhouse gas. .
Between livestock and crops, roughly 1.5 times
more land would be needed to make up for declines
brought on by a 100% switch to organic practices.
