S. Korea mulls supplementary measures to soft land 52-hour workweek for SMEs

South Korea is mulling measures to soft land the 52-hour workweek scheme for small and medium sized firms - including giving them a grace period - due to take effect next year.
That's according to Hwang Deok-soon, senior presidential secretary for job creation, on Sunday during a press briefing at the presidential Blue House.
The 52-hour workweek system has been in place for large companies in South Korea since July 2018 and it is set to be expanded to companies with 50 to 299 employees from January 1, 2020.
But, it's stirred a lot of controversy as the shorter workweek could be a financial burden for smaller business owners especially amid an economic slowdown.
The jobs secretary to the president said the South Korean government will have to come up with measures to soft land the system if the legislative process to supplement the 52-hour workweek system does not go so smoothly.
