Common Joint Pain Therapy
Could Be Harmful, Says Study.
Conducted by researchers
at the Boston University of Medicine, the
report was published in the journal, 'Radiology.'.
It found that corticosteroid
injections administered in the knees
and hips could actually speed up osteoarthritis.
Long-term effects could also
speed up the need for joint
replacement surgeries.
The intra-articular corticosteroid injections in the hips and knees are not as safe as we thought, Ali Guermazi, Lead Study Author, via NBC News.
The injections are intended to
reduce inflammation and pain.
According to the study, 8 percent of
the 459 patients who received
one to three injections of the
therapy developed complications.
Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition
affecting 30 million Americans.
Doctors recommend noninvasive
treatments such as exercise, weight loss
and physical therapy before trying injections
