Maharashtra assembly elections: know the political equation of Chembur seat
Chembur was derived from the Marathi word Chemburi which means big crab. The Chembur assembly seat is part of the Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha seat. The BJP occupied the Chembur seat from 1990 to 1999, but in the 2004 assembly elections, the Congress wrested the seat from the BJP. In 2009, Chandrakant Damodhar Handore of Congress won here for the second consecutive time. He defeated MNS's Anil Bachubhai by a big margin. However, in 2014, Congress lost this seat and Shiv Sena took this seat in its bag.

चेंबूर का नाम मराठी शब्द चेंबूरी से लिया गया जिसका अर्थ बड़ा केकड़ा होता है। चेंबूर विधानसभा सीट मुंबई साउथ सेंट्रल लोकसभा सीट का हिस्सा है। चेंबूर सीट पर बीजेपी का 1990 से कब्जा 1999 तक कब्जा रहा, लेकिन 2004 के विधानसभा चुनाव में कांग्रेस ने सीट बीजेपी से छीन ली। 2009 में यहां से कांग्रेस के चंद्रकांत दामोधर हंडोरे ने लगातार दूसरी बार यहां जीत दर्ज की थी। उन्होंने ने से MNS के अनिल बाचूभाई को बड़े अंतर से हराया था। हालांकि 2014 में कांग्रेस को ये सीट गवानी पड़ी और शिवसेना ने इस सीट को अपनी झोली में डाल ली.
