The Banshee - A Twin-Jet Carrier-Based Fighter (1948)

The McDonnell F2H Banshee manufactured by McDonnell Aircraft is an American single-seat carrier-based jet fighter aircraft developed from the McDonnell FH Phantom.
The F2H Banshee was one of the primary American fighters used during the Korean War and was the only jet-powered fighter ever deployed by the Royal Canadian Navy.
In 1949, the F2H Banshee set a jet altitude record of 52,000 feet. Because of its good performance at high altitude the F2H Banshee initially proved its worth as an escort for long-range USAF bomber formations.
The maiden flight of the F2H Banshee took place on the 11th of January 1947 and it went into service on August 1948.
Primary users were the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and the Royal Canadian Navy. There were approx. 895 F2H Banshee produced. The last series of Banshee retired on the 12th of September 1962 to the Royal Canadian Navy.
