UM lodges police report over student's anti-VC graduation stunt

A University Malaya (UM) student carried out a bold stunt during a convocation ceremony on Monday.

After receiving his scroll, Wong Yan Ke opened a placard on stage, calling for the rejection of racism, and for UM vice-chancellor (VC) Abdul Rahim Hashim to resign.

The VC is being protested over his alleged racist statements at the Malay Dignity Congress recently.

UM Student Union vice-president Yap Wen Qing previously claimed that Abdul Rahim said the change in government after GE14 had eliminated Malay political dominance and Malay privileges were being questioned.

Abdul Rahim is also alleged to have warned others not to challenge the social contract.

A counter protest was also held against Wong's action.

A group of students who gathered with placards, pledged their support for the VC.

In a statement today, UM condemned Wong's protest.

UM added that a police report has been lodged over Wong's stunt.
