Clean-up work was underway across Hong Kong the day after violent protests marred grand celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.  The violence escalated on October 1, 2019, despite the city being under virtual lockdown since the morning, with many shops and MTR railway stations closed.
