'OK' Hand Gesture
Declared a Hate Symbol.
The gesture is widely known for saying things are "good-to-go.".
But, it has now been added
to a database by the
Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
The ADL says the sign has been hijacked by the
alt-right, white nationalists and other extremists.
The organization explains that hateful use of the
"OK" sign started as a hoax on the website 4Chan.org. .
Extremists then took it as
a symbol of white supremacy
and have since adopted it.
At least some white supremacists seem to have abandoned the ironic or satiric intent behind the original trolling campaign and used the symbol as a sincere expression of white supremacy, ADL, via statement.
The ADL also points to use of
the symbol by mass killers,
such as Australian gunman
Brenton Tarrant.
This past March, Tarrant killed
over 50 people in two mosques
in Christchurch, New Zealand.
He was reportedly seen
making the "OK" sign in court
