Good Start: Heartwarming Back-to-School Stories

This week’s theme is kindness in schools, and we’ve got three inspiring stories to share with you.

For our first story, a friendly faculty member was spotted comforting a young student during a moment of need. Little Kenlee is a fourth grader at Passmore Elementary School in Alvin, Texas, where she has a special connection with a custodian named Ms. Esther. Kenlee, who has autism, was in the cafeteria at school one morning when the noise in the room became too much for her. She laid down on the stage alone, wrapped in a blanket. That’s when Ms. Esther came to her, lying down by her side. Hollie, Kenlee’s mother, posted the photo online, calling Ms. Esther an angel and praising her for always being there for Kenlee and her classmates. Hollee says this isn’t out of the ordinary for Ms. Esther, as she is known for her huge heart and going above and beyond for the students.

For our next story, one girl in Tennessee is reminding us that an important aspect of kindness is to also be kind to yourself and love yourself. Promise Sawyers is a lively and confident fifth grader but when students at her new school bullied her for wearing an afro, that confidence was shaken. Instead of remaining silent and feeling defeated, Promise took to social media. She posted a powerful video filled with self-love and encouragement. The video has now received over a million views. Promise hopes the video will help other children realize that they are beautiful just the way they are.

For our final story this week, we all know that back to school blues can lead to many kids wishing they were anywhere but school. Luckily, one teacher is bringing a touch of magic to her classroom this year. Staci Lamb has been a teacher for the past seven years at Elkton High School in Maryland. But for the new school year, her students might feel like they’re in Hogwarts alongside Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Staci first starting incorporating Harry Potter decorations into her classroom last school year, but this year she decided to fully transform the space for her new class of ninth graders. Staci hopes her classroom will inspire students to embrace their creative side and she also hopes that it will inspire other teachers to incorporate their personal passions into their own teaching methods.
