Mother dog makes ‘Herculean’ effort to move pups to safety during floods in India

A stray dog had given birth to five pups inside a gutter in Gowripet area of Kolar city in southern India and put in an incredible effort to save them from rising rainwaters.

On September 2, it started raining heavily and the low-lying gutter began to fill up with water. Fearing for her pups, the mother dog decided to move them to another gutter on the other side of the road.

The other gutter was on higher ground but had a very narrow opening making it very difficult for the dog to get in and get out.

But undeterred, she lifted all her five pups one by one and struggled to shift them to their new home.

Many residents saw the dog’s plight and were moved. Though some of them tried to provide shelter to the dog, she had already moved a few pups to the gutter and preferred to keep them together.

“She is very attached to her pups. She does not leave them even to feed herself,” said Lakshman Rao, who lives in the neighbourhood. “We will ensure that she is well fed from now on,” he said.
