World Cup: Belgium beats Algeria, Mexico holds Brazil
  • 5 years ago
Belgium battled back from a goal down to beat gutsy Algeria, 2-1, in their World Cup Group H opener. Belgium seemed to suffer a case of stage fright in their first World Cup match in 12 years as it took them 70 minutes to score a goal courtesy of a header from substitute Marouane Fellini. Ten minutes later, another substitute fired a goal for Belgium, with Dries Mertens converting Eden Hazard’s assist. In another Group H match, veteran Alexander Kerzhakov scored three minutes after coming on as a substitute to rescue a 1-1 draw for Russia against South Korea. Meanwhile, Mexican goal-keeper Guillermo Ochoa produced a series of superb reflex saves to preserve a 0-0 draw against hosts Brazil. Ochoa thwarted Paulinho, Neymar and Thiago Silva when they seemed certain to score. -- Mornings @ ANC, June 18, 2014.
