PH set to receive warship from S. Korea

MANILA - Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin confirmed the Philippines will receive a warship from South Korea in October. Gazmin said this does not mean that the country is ready to go to war with any rival claimant to disputed areas of the West Philippine Sea. "Hindi naman kailangan magkaroon ng warship para lumaban sa gyera. Ito ay kailangan natin para maipagtanggol natin yung ating tungkulin at tsaka mga teritoryo," he said. Aside from the warship, South Korea is also donating rescue boats that the Philippines can use in times of calamity. It is also deploying more troops to help in the rehabilitation of Yolanda-hit areas. Gazmin, who also chairs the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, conferred the Bakas Parangal Award to the South Korean Army contingent in recognition of their contributions to the rehabilitation effort in such areas as Tanauan, Tolosa and Palo, Leyte. South Korea's troop commander in the Philippines said their assistance recognizes, in turn, the help South Korea received from Philippine soldiers at the height of the Korean War. The first batch of 280 South Korean soldiers is returning home after six months. During that time, they helped to rebuild a hospital, several schools and offices, as well as a vocational training center near their base camp. MORNINGS@ANC, June 11, 2014
