Participants in the 2014 Balikatan defended the conduct of the joint military exercises in the country. Speaking to "Mornings @ ANC" on Wednesday, Lt. Annaleah Cazcarro and Gunnery Sgt. Christine Polvorosa said the Philippine armed forces have become more effective and proficient in crisis planning because of the training. They added joint military exercises also help improve their capabilities for maritime security and humanitarian assistance. Militant groups have criticized the Balikatan, saying it only serves the interests of the United States. Nearly 5,500 Filipino and American troops are taking part in the 2-week joint military exercises scheduled to run until May 16. ANC Dateline Philippines, May 7, 2014
