Nadal, Federer survive fierce heat to advance
  • 5 years ago
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both advanced to the second round of the Australian Open as a 41° heat affected all players. Federer took on big-serving local James Duckworth, and beat him 6-4, 6-4, and 6-2 to avoid a long, exhausting match. The extreme heat made all players careful to drink plenty of water and rest in the shade when they could. Top-seed Rafa Nadal also avoided extend play when his opponent, Bernard Tomic, suffered an injury in the opening game. Tomic told Nadal he could no longer go one, having suffered and apparent thigh injury. -- Mornings @ ANC, January 15, 2014.
