MANILA – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expressed dismay over the release of Davidson Bangayan, a man accused of being smuggling king "David Tan." Duterte said a picture of the alleged smuggling king he earlier released clearly resembles Bangayan. The mayor believes that the name David Tan is "fictitious." "He could use other aliases, Andres Bonifacio, Jose Rizal so as far as I am concerned, fictitious na," he said. Bangayan, earlier arrested by the the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for power pilferage, was eventually released because the arrest warrant issued by the Caloocan City Regional Trial Court specified that it was for "David Tan who is not Davidson Bangayan." Duterte recently declared war on Tan and several other rice smugglers in the city, threatening to "unmask" Tan and the latter's alleged protectors. He even threatened to "kill" rice smugglers if they did not stop operating in his city. The NBI, an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ), is now on a mission to prove that David Tan and Bangayan are one and the same, especially that records show that they have the same address, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said. – report from Danjo Revilla, ABS-CBN News Davao
