More order in Tacloban; no system at airport
  • 5 years ago
TACLOBAN CITY - There has been a big improvement in the peace and order situation in typhoon-hit Tacloban City but there seems to be no system in place for people at the airport who are trying to get a ride out of the city. A report by ABS-CBN correspondent Atom Araullo said distribution of relief packs is ongoing not just in Tacloban but in other municipalities ravaged by super typhoon Yolanda. He, however, noted that the distribution is being hampered by lack of vehicles and a fuel shortage. He also said there is also a problem in bringing the food packs to the barangay level instead of just the city centers. Foreign correspondents noted that the relief aid is here but distribution is slow. The report noted a "mini crisis" at the Tacloban airport as some residents have yet to get a ride on the military's C130 plane to Cebu or manila despite waiting for 2-3 days. The report said some families are getting separated and there is no good system to get the families on the flights. Araullo said that since Monday, there has been a big improvement in the peace and order situation in Tacloban City. While there were reports of looting in the first 3 days after the typhoon, the arrival of police and soldiers has restored a measure of order in the city. Araullo said he has received reports of people breaking into homes, reports of rape and inmates getting out of jail but these reports are not verified. He said earlier reports of armed groups circling the city are not true. He said food and water remains a problem and there is still no rebuilding of shelters for residents.
