MANILA – Authorities in Tacloban City are trying to hunt down inmates who escaped from the provincial jail. A report from the Associated Press (AP) said the inmates escaped after breaking down a jail wall. Army Brigadier General Virgilio Espineli, the deputy regional military commander, told AP that some returned after the guards fired gun shots, but an undetermined number of inmates escaped are still unaccounted for. Espineli said they have yet to determine the exact number of those who escaped. There were about 600 prisoners detained in the jail. “Where will they go? What will they eat?” Espineli said. The report did not say, however, if the jail wall was damaged by the typhoon. Espineli added that the military is also assisting in relief operations and other problems, such as the destruction of buildings where about 1,000 soldiers in Leyte were staying. Tacloban was one of the worst-hit areas by super typhoon "Yolanda," causing massive damage to infrastructure.
