S. Leyte gov: Don't take 'Yolanda' lightly

MANILA - Southern Leyte Governor Roger Mercado advised residents and local government units of areas in the path of the typhoon not to take super typhoon Yolanda lightly. "We would like to advise all provinces, cities along the path of the typhoon Yolanda not to take this lightly. They have to prepare now, evacuate. Maghanda na kayo kasi malakas na malakas. Do not underestimate this. Please prepare now," he told ANC. Mercado said some 7,771 families or 31,920 individuals have already left their homes to seek safer grounds. The governor said the entire province is now without electricity, and all major roads have been rendered impassable due to toppled trees. PAGASA said Yolanda made landfall over Guiuan, Eastern Samar at 4:40 a.m. It made a second landfall over Tolosa, Leyte at 7 a.m. The third landfall was recorded at 9:40 a.m. in Daanbantayan, Cebu. PAGASA, which was packing maximum sustained winds of 235 kph near the center, said Yolanda is forecast to move west northwest at 39 kph. After hitting Guiuan, it is expected to traverse the provinces of Biliran, the northern tip of Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Romblon, Semirara Island, southern part of Mindoro and then Busuanga. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in its 6 a.m. update, said a total of 26,675 families or 125,604 persons were evacuated pre-emptively to 109 evacuation centers in 22 provinces, 13 cities, 73 municipalities in Regions IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, and CARAGA. A total of 2,087 passengers, 50 vessels, 557 rolling cargoes and 54 motorboats were stranded in Region IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, and VIII. As of November 7, power interruption was being experienced in the following municipalities in Regions IV-B and VIII: San Franciso, Camotes Cebu Torijos and Buenavista, Marinduque.
