MANILA - Acting Zamboanga City Police Chief Sr. Supt. Jose Chiquito Malayo on Thursday broke his silence over how he was able to convince 23 members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Nur Misuari group to surrender. In an interview with ANC, Malayo said he told the armed men that since his unit was already thinking he had been abducted and could have been killed, there was no way for them to leave the area alive. He then urged the 23 men to surrender or they would all end up dead. Malayo also told ANC the MNLF members he encountered just wanted a ceasefire. Meanwhile, he downplayed reports that he may receive a recognition or even a promotion. ANC Dateline Philippines, September 19, 2013
