MANILA – Some residents displaced by the ongoing standoff between government forces and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels are starting to get sick. The fighting has displaced at least 13,000 residents from at least 6 barangays raided by Nur Misuari-led MNLF men. As of Wednesday, at least 9,000 evacuees are in Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Grandstand. The rest are taking shelter in various evacuation sites such as schools and churches. The residents were particularly complaining of coughs and colds due to the cold weather and lack of roofing. They were also complaining of lack of food. Some residents have set up tents in the open field while some were forced to sleep on the road due to lack of space. More residents are expected to leave their homes as the fighting continues to escalate. The standoff, which has already claimed at least 12 lives, is now on its fourth day. – report from Paul Palacio, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
