MANILA, Philippines - What is the number one complaint of Filipino consumers against telecommunication companies? According to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), it has received 1,569 complaints in the first six months of the year against Globe, Smart, Sun and PLDT. Data from the NTC consumer welfare and protection division also showed there were more complaints in 2012 than in 2011. In 2011, there were only 1,028 complaints and in 2012, there were 2,143 complaints. From January to June 2013, the NTC said there were 591 complaints filed versus Smart; 556 versus Globe; 241 versus Sun Cellular and 181 versus PLDT. While dropped calls topped the type of complaints in previous months, internet connectivity or the lack of it, is now the number one complaint of Filipino consumers. "Dapat i-explain nila na yan, kasi shared bandwidth. If marami gumagamit, eh babagal din yun speed," Froilan Jamias, OIC of the NTC's consumer welfare and protection division, said. Globe said it has not yet received a copy of the report. For its part, PLDT/ Smart spokesperson Mon Isberto said the companies are addressing the issue. "Hindi surprising, inaasahan natin mangyari ito kasi mas marami gumagamit ng internet. Sa amin, sa part ng network service providers, kailangan namin pahusayin ang aming network facilities," Isberto said. Out of the estimated 105 million cellphone subscribers in the Philippines, only 6.2 million have internet subscription. Majority are still using cellphones for just calls and text. The NTC noted that the number of complaints has not yet reached an alarming stage, but this might serve as a wake-up call for telcos to improve their service.
