Elections: Meet Ginni Mahi, Pride of Punjab’s 32% Dalit Community
  • 5 years ago
Gurkanwal Bharti, aka Ginni Mahi, is an 17-year-old singer who sings about Dalit pride. Her idols being Sant Ravidas and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
If democracy was just about numbers, Dalits, with 32 percent of Punjab’s population, would have got more than their fair share of political representation. The community is an attractive vote bank alright, but a passive one at that.
Ginni says that as a woman, its possible for her to express herself through her songs and this is only because of Dr Ambedkar. Through her songs, Ginni powerfully asserts her opinion on caste neutrality, economic parity, social equality and women’s rights.
