The new world record for doughnut eating was set in Santa Monica, California at 55 donuts in 8 minutes.
Ten participants competed in the World Donut Eating Championship, including some members of the Major League Eating circuit, but Chestnut beat his own mark of 49 donuts and was declared champion of the event.
Scoring a $2,000 prize (€1,772), Chestnut acknowledged that the donuts were “heavy” and asserted that he “could have eaten more donuts” but “never quite got into the right rhythm”.
