Over 1100 cinema halls in Chennai are on strike.
The reason? In addition to the GST (28% for tickets priced over Rs.100 and 18% for below Rs.100), theater owners now have to also pay 30% municipal tax.
Not in the mood for math? Allow me. Basically, for a Rs.120 ticket, the addition tax amounts to Rs.68!
