August 9, 1969.
The 26-year-old expecting mother
was murdered in an attack at her
home in the Hollywood hills.
The wife of auteur director
Roman Polanski, Tate and four
others were the victims of members
of the Charles Manson "Family" cult.
Polanski was out of the
country at the time of the
slayings. Among the victims
was coffee heiress Abigail Folger.
The slayings — in which
the victims were both shot and
stabbed — were gruesome,
capturing the attention of the nation.
Manson had targeted the
house because a producer
who once lived there turned
him down for a record deal.
Following a bizarre and highly
sensationalized trial, Manson was
sentenced to death. Because California
overturned the death penalty, he remains in prison. .
