China claims that most detainees have left controversial re-education camps in the nation’s western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.  The claim made by the Xinjiang government during a rare press conference on July 30, 2019, also said the released detainees have returned to society.  The United Nations had estimated that more than 1 million Uygurs and Muslim minorities were detained in the mass internment camps.
