Relief efforts continue in earthquake-hit Philippines as cost of damages reach 4.5million pounds

Relief continued pouring into the island of Batanes, northern Philippines today (July 30) after a twin earthquake struck last Saturday.

Nine people were killed and around 60 others were injured after the magnitude 5.4 and magnitude 5.9 quakes struck the remote area at around 4am local time.

Most of the families who lost their homes stayed in evacuation centers.

Footage from one village in the region showed the devastation caused to local stone buildings, with a church collapsing.

Officials said today that the damage caused by the quakes has risen to 282 million (4.5million GBP).

Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco said this as Batanes was placed under a state of calamity following the temblors that killed 9 people and injured some 100 more.
