Hong Kong police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in an area near China's liaison office.

Tens of thousands of mostly young people have been protesting in the Sai Wan and Causeway Bay areas of Hong Kong Island, although some have now gone home, leaving a smaller numbers of more hard-core activists.

The protest near the liaison office in Sai Wan, shown here, has seen the most violent clashes.

The protests have been going on for almost two months, initially over a planned extradition deal with mainland China, but now over Beijing's control of Hong Kong more broadly.
